Peak Into COS: Trolley Tracks through Time with John Haney
Over the years volunteers at the Pikes Peak Trolley Museum & Restoration Shop have worked many hundreds of hours to restore the Birney to operational condition.
On September 11, 2005, at PPHSRF’s annual Member’s Day, the Birney saw daylight for the first time in many years. The car was pushed out of the carbarn allowing all to see the beautiful new varnished woodwork and an almost completed canvas roof.
Then in July 2006 PPHSRF negotiated with the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club and was able to purchase the Birney. The result was renewed restoration efforts with the goal of running the car using its own power. That goal was achieved and celebrated July 27, 2023, with the member tour of the Historic Preservation Alliance.
Mike Pach, a local photographer, created a book of the Pikes Peak region that shows historic and contemporary photos of the same subject. John Haney and Birney Car 135 are featured.
